Olta Azul Pufferfish Leather
What we do

Alien species become  invasive when they spread to new ecosystems and pose threats to biological diversity, food security, or human health.

Join us in creating positive benefits to land, sea, humans.

The most effective approach to combat invasive species is through commercialization, ensuring ongoing removal efforts have an increasingly positive impact on our environment, people and economy  as our business flourishes. Through the vigilant removal of pufferfish in our waters, we actively contribute to the resurgence of native species populations, with a special focus on cephalopods, which have undergone regional declines at the expense of  insatiable pufferfish diets.

Nestled in the heart of southern Turkey, where invasive pufferfish proliferate, we’ve established three unique collection points where dedicated fishers gather these precious skins. Each skin carries a story, directly linking it to the resilient small-scale fisher who fished it. Amidst the backdrop of a dwindling fishing industry, plagued by fewer catches and soaring petrol prices, we stand as a beacon of hope, extending a lifeline to these valiant fishers during these tumultuous times.

This invasive species, far from endangered, readily traverses international boundaries, and its skins are poised to become a valuable by-product of the pharmaceutical sector. Sourced exclusively through ethical hook and line practices, our commitment goes beyond aesthetics – it’s our testament to using eco-positive practices. As we relentlessly work to improve our environmental footprint at every stage, from sustainable fishing practices to eco-friendly tanning processes.

About US

Olta Azul presents an eco-friendly, premium alternative to traditional leather sourced from an invasive pufferfish species that infiltrated the Mediterranean Sea two decades ago.

This is one of the worst marine invasive species ever encountered. It poses many threats to human health, native biodiversity and the economy. They are poisonous if eaten by humans, has attacked some swimmers, grows to huge sizes, and wreaks havoc on fishers by destroying their nets and eating their catches.

Choosing our leather supports marine biodiversity restoration, enhances the livelihoods of small-scale fishers, and contributes to the launch of our innovative blue economy initiative.

At our core, we prioritize ethical fishing methods, using only hook & line to ensure zero by-catch and strongly supporting small-scale fishers. Our local experts meticulously tan each skin in small, sustainable batches. Plus, we’re pioneering all-organic tanning techniques. We’re committed to minimizing our footprint, offering you the latest eco-positive choices.

Custom colors and finishes? Just ask – we’re here to cater to your desires. If you’re seeking something unique, reach out, and we’ll make it a reality.
